James Frey’s mantra throughout Pieces is “I am an Alcoholic and I am a drug Addict and I am a Criminal.” He uses this fictitious criminal past as a significant element in his book. For a book that spent so many weeks as the number 1 book in the country, shouldn’t someone be responsible for the lies told within. A consumer has a right to know what they are purchasing, I wonder if Frey’s book would have been a sensation were it labeled as a fictional account. I bet there are plenty of fictional books wherein alcoholic, drug addicted people change their lives around. What made his so compelling to the public is that someone supposedly did turn their life around.
