Another teen driver dead. Three more teens injured. The Spring slaughter of teenage drivers continues unabated. The lastest tragedy happened yesterday in Dearborn, Michigan when a 17 year old was killed and three teen passangers, aged 15, 15 and 17, were seriously injured when their 2006 Jeep SUV rolled over and struck a tree. Police report speeding played a factor. As as been previously reported on this blog, legislators must make it more difficult for teens to get their driver’s licenses. Allstate Insurance Company is to be commended for their current PR campaign to deal with this topic.
To their credit, they are taking out full page ads to lobby for graduated driver’s licenses (GDL) for teens. The ads point out that a portion of the brain dealing with decision making and anticipating future risks of present behavior, doesn’t fully develop until the early 20’s. Allstate reports that there are 6,000 teen deaths and 300,000 teen injuries each year. Where is the national outrage? We need to stop these tragedies.
