The toy giant Mattel announced the purchase of the rights to several games from Out of the Box Publishing Inc. Mattel will now have the right to produce and distribute Apples to Apples, Snorta, and Blink. This acquisition may be in response to the recent toy recalls that have focused on millions of Chinese made toys bearing the Mattel name.
A Mattel vice president said the games were acquired because they are family oriented and can be understood by almost anyone. Although the company has not said this was an effort to boost the company in the public eye and in the stock market, I am sure it was a consideration for the acquisition.
Earlier this month, Mattel announced a worldwide recall of almost 19 million items, including dolls, cars and action figures. Some of the items were contaminated with lead paint. Others had small magnets that children might swallow.
Shares of Mattel added 13 cents to $21.81 in afternoon trading.
