A person was crushed to death under a Metro bus in downtown Seattle on Wednesday night. Police think the person was bumped into the road by a bicyclist. Wednesday’s incident isn’t the first time a Metro bus was involved in a fatality accident this summer. Stephanie Reynolds, 52, of Shoreline was killed June 1, run over by the rear wheels of a bus at Northwest Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue Northwest. Reynolds apparently slipped and fell under the vehicle.
Two important points jump out from the story: (1) METRO may be liable for either the accidents directly or failure to put adequate safety measures in place at the bus stops and (2) in Washington persons can recover for the emotional distress they experience as a result of seeing someone else get injured.
