Women with breast implants are three times more likely to kill themselves than women who have not undergone the operation, a study released yesterday revealed. Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center linked breast implants to suicide in the study which examined more than 3500 women who go implants between 1965 & 1993.

“Such findings warrant increased screening, counseling and perhaps post-implant monitoring of women seeking cosmetic breast implants,” said Dr. Loren Lipworth, an epidemiologist with the Tennessee school who led the research, which was published in Annals of Plastic Surgery.

Potential mood disorders associated with breast implants include depression and body dysmorphic disorder, a condition characterized by an obsession with physical appearance, sometimes accompanied by excessive grooming rituals.

The study did not answer the important question of whether the implants caused the suicidal behavior or whether some women who chose to undergo breast implantation surgery may be at a higher risk for suicide due to pre-existing psychological conditions.
