A Minneapolis bridge carrying a major highway collapsed into the Mississippi River during rush hour, Wednesday.

At least three people were killed when vehicles were thrown into the river during the bridge collapse, officials report.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Washington said there was no indication of terrorism involved in the accident.

A 500-foot (150-metre) span of the eight-lane steel and concrete bridge, which was under repair, was crowded with commuters when it buckled and fell into the river and onto concrete embankments at about 6:05 p.m. CDT (2310 GMT), witnesses reported.

Witnesses report they heard a loud rumbling sound as the bridge that once stood 65 feet high, collapsed into the river. Media reports 20 to 30 injuries with three confirmed deaths.
