Newly compiled reports released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Pool Safely campaign, show 137 children younger than 15 drowned in a pool or spa during summer season. Additionally, another 168 children of that same age were seen in the emergency room for near-fat incidents that involved pools and spas.
“These figures strong suggest child drownings are a serious public health problem,” CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said.
The figures provided from media reports show that 54 of these drownings happened soon after the children left an adult who was in their immediate area. And, 31 children drowned despite others being present.
The media reports further show that the CPSC’s annual reports that show young children and toddles are especially vulnerable – at least 100 of the 137, were under the age of five. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children one to four years of age. But, not all child drownings are reported and tracked by the media.
The Pool Safely campaign is intended to reinforce the following safety steps: adults stay close to children in the water, be alert and watch children in and around the pool at all times.
