As more people are becoming aware of – and victims of – the complications associated with hernia mesh implantation, an increasing number of lawsuits are being filed against manufacturers including C.R. Bard, Gore, Atrium, & Johnson & Johnson.

Some hernia mesh plaintiffs claim that they were misinformed about the hernia mesh surgery complication rate, which some researchers have estimated to be between 12 and 30 percent. Given these statistics, an estimated 68,000 to 170,000 patients in the United Kingdom alone are at risk for serious complications. In the United States, where there are more than 100,000 hernia mesh implants every year, this number is likely even higher.

The widely-known complications and safety concerns associated with pelvic mesh, an almost identical surgical mesh, led the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a nationwide ban on pelvic mesh sales. Even so, most hernia mesh products are still on the market and remain available to U.S. consumers today. Hernia mesh has been associated with numerous medical complications that range from minor issues to life-threatening conditions:

  • Bleeding
  • Contraction or dislodging of the mesh
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Mesh erosion
  • Organ perforation
  • Pain during sex
  • Sepsis
  • Scarring
  • Urinary problems

Coping with mesh-related complications can also lead to mental health issues in patients, especially those with a substantially decreased quality of life. One study found that postoperative medical complications may be a significant factor to the development of depression, anxiety, and an overall decrease in psychosocial well-being. Mental health issues have also been linked to a longer recovery time, forcing hernia mesh patients to suffer for even longer.

While hernia mesh litigation may no longer appear at the top of the news, it is important to be informed on what is going on. Big pharma companies need to be held accountable for the harm their hernia mesh devices cause.
