A recent study by the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) in the Columbus Children’s Research Institute at Columbus Children’s Hospital in Ohio shows that costs associated with the care of traumatic brain injuries suffered by children exceed $1 billion in hospital charges each year.

New York Attorney Mike Kaplan makes a good point in suggesting that these costs don’t begin to cover the total losses a child will suffer as the result of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The fact is that these are not the only losses which must be taken into account after such a tragic occurrence. Any child enduring a TBI will experience a lifetime loss of earnings as well as the loss of enjoyment of life. Moreover, the parents of a child with a TBI are faced with the reality that their child will always require assistance to care for himself or herself not to mention the concern over who will care for their child’s needs after they pass on.
