The opposing parties in a lawsuit stemming from a 2007 gas leak at Louisiana fuel and lubricant manufacturing plant owned by Chevron have finally reached an agreement to settle the case.

The lawsuit alleged that hundreds of residents of Belle Chasse, LA were exposed to toxic and potentially harmful substances when a large gas leak occurred at the nearby Chevron Oronite Oak Point manufacturing plant on Jan. 30, 2007. The suit accused the company of failing to maintain and operate in a safe manner and failing to follow guidelines to safeguard the plant against leaks.

The leak closed down the nearby Highway 23 for several hours and trapped hundreds of neighboring residents in their homes while experts examined the severity of the leak and potential dangers.

The plaintiffs were originally seeking a class action certification for the case, but, their motion for class certification was dismissed last August.

The lawsuit was dismissed on by Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle after he was informed that the parties had reached a compromise.

The details of the settlement were not made available to the public.
