A recent hearing before the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee highlighted the bureaucratic hell wounded war veterans are facing when they return home from Iraq. The mountains of Department of Veterans’ Affairs paperwork and red tape encountered by veterans seeking medical care is especially problematic for those with traumatic brain injuries. Sadly, brain damage from improvised explosive devices has become the signature injury of this war. Additionally, thousands have been afflicted by post-traumatic stress disorder. How long is it going to take the VA to be able to deal with these injuries? The stories of three of these heroic Iraq veterans who now struggle for basic rehabilitative care is set forth in a moving article by Lawrence Downes in today’s New York Times. Read this article and speak out on behalf of the wounded vets. Our government has done a shameful job providing medical benefits to them and they deserve better.
