The number of hepatitis A cases linked to contaminated frozen strawberries served by Tropical Smoothie Cafe’ seems to grow daily. The number is now up to 100, with at least 80 Virginia residents reported to have contracted hepatitis A after drinking smoothies from Tropical Smoothie Cafe’. According to the Virginia Department of Health, the contaminated Egyptian strawberries were served by Tropical Smoothie as early as May and as late as August 9.
Of the 100 reported hepatitis A cases, 80 are from Virginia, 10 from Maryland, five from West Virginia, one from North Carolina, and one from New York. Tropical Smoothie and the Health Department have been criticized for their handling of the hepatitis A outbreak from Tropical Smoothie drinks made with contaminated strawberries.
When we reported on this hepatitis A outbreak eight days ago, the number of reported cases in Virginia was 55. It is anticipated that more cases will continue to emerge, due in part to the fact that it takes up to 50 days for people to experience the symptoms of hepatitis A. Hepatitis A is a permanent liver disease, which can lead to liver failure. Symptoms include nausea, dark urine, and yellowed skin and eyes.
