The U.S. government is moving against a popular baby recliner manufacturer after receiving reports that the product is related to five infant deaths. The Nap Nanny is a portable baby recliner, and one particular model has the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in an uproar because of its serious safety defects.
The "Chill" Nap Nanny model is at the root of the CPSC outcry and the agency sought out an order on Wednesday that would require the manufacturer of the product, Baby Matters LLC of Berwyn, PA, to immediately notify the public of the serious safety risk its product poses to consumers. The agency also wants the company to issue a full refund to any consumers who purchased the product.
Another two versions of the recliner were recalled in 2010 after the government received reports of 22 infants hanging over the edge of the foam recliner, and one death. In all of the cases, the infants had been harnessed into the recliner using the harness. The agency has since learned of four more infant deaths, three of which were related to the older recliner model and one to the new "Chill" model. Nap Nanny's website claims that the company has gone out of business and will no longer be accepting returns, cancellations, or changes to recent orders.
