A South Carolina prison guard pleaded guilty to charges of having sex with inmate Susan Smith. Investigators uncovered the relationship while investigating charges of inmate abuse. Smith, serving a life sentence for the nationally publicized drowning deaths of her two sons, admitted to having sex with Lt. Houston Cagle four times. Officials have subsequently fired Cagle.
Cagle faces up to 20 years in prison for his relationships with Smith and another female inmate. Capt. Alfred R. Rowe Jr. was also arrested and charged with having sex with Smith. Rowe’s trial is scheduled for September.
Prison authorities have begun a comprehensive investigation into other allegations of wrongdoing among prison staffers. More than twelve prison guards and other corrections department employees have been charged with a variety of offenses including smuggling drugs to inmates and having sex with inmates.
