On June 14, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Kolcraft announced a voluntary recall of 36,270 defective strollers (36,000 in the U.S. and 270 in Canada) due to a finger amputation hazard. According to CPSC’s recall announcement, three children’s fingertips had been amputated and two adults suffered smashed fingers while locking or unlocking the Kolcraft Contours Options’ stroller’s hinge mechanism used to adjust the handlebars on the strollers.
The strollers were manufactured in China and imported to the U.S. by Kolcraft Enterprises of Chicago, Illinois. The "Kolcraft Contours Options" three- and four-wheeled strollers being recalled include models numbers beginning with ZL002, ZL005, ZL008, ZL015 and ZL018. The model number and date of manufacture are printed on a sticker located above the left wheel on model ZL002, while on models ZL005, ZL008, ZL015 and ZL018, the model number and date of manufacture are printed on a label sewn to the edge of back of the stroller seat pad.
The strollers were sold at children’s specialty and retail stores nationwide and in Canada, and online by Amazon.com, ToysRUs.com, and Target.com. The strollers sold for approximately $150 to $160, from January 2006 through January 2012.
The CPSC recommends consumers immediately stop using the strollers and contact Kolcraft for a free repair kit.
