According to an MSNBC report, Nissan will recall approximately 37,000 of its small Versa vehicles sold in the U.S. with manual transmissions as the vehicles may be able to be shifted out of park without a driver's depressing the brake pedal, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This defect, to the brake-shift interlock system, is a potential safety problem.
In addition, 36,608 Model Year 2012 Versas that possess automatic transmissions also "may experience interference between the shifter rod and shift knob, which could cause the driver to inadvertently place the vehicle in gear without stepping on the brake pedal." This would increase the risk of an accident and, hence, the recall. Nissan discovered the Versa problem in November 2011 and is notifying owners and says they will replace the shifter knob or shifter assembly as necessary.
This recall was expected to begin February 20. A spokesperson for Nissan has indicated no accidents or injuries have been reported related to these problems.
