Nissan Motor Co. will recall 13,919 Altima sedan vehicles due to loose bolts in the steering system increasing the vehicles’ crash risk, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Altima model years affected by the recall are 2012 and 2013 models manufactured at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi plant May 10 through July 26, according to Reuters, October 22, article by Bernie Woodall. The problem with the bolts had been noticed by plant workers during a routine test in late July. The bolts are four transverse link bolts and two power steering rack bolts which “were not torqued to the proper specification,” according to Nissan. The bolts in question may shake loose, and drivers could become aware of a rattling sound. If the loose bolts fall out completely, a driver may have difficulty controlling steering of the vehicle. There have been crashes, according to Nissan, as a result of this problem which Nissan decided on October 3 constituted a safety defect warranting a recall. 2012-2013 Altima owners will be contacted beginning October 29 and asked to bring their cars to Nissan’s dealerships where the bolts will be properly adjusted.
