You have probably already noticed that there are more sobriety checkpoints throughout Oklahoma the past few weeks. The papers have been littered with up to 20 people being arrested at these checkpoints for DUIs. Oklahoma is following the lead of other states in cracking down on holiday drinking and driving incidents.
According to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and R. Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, December 7, 2009 kicked off the "Over the Limit. Under Arrest" national drunk and impaired driving crackdown involving thousands of law enforcement agencies during the holiday season.
Mr. LaHood noted that
drunk driving is a major public safety threat that still claims thousands of lives every year … many states continue to step up their efforts to get drunk drivers off our roads, but the numbers tell us we have to do more. Drinking and driving is dangerous and unacceptable, and I’m asking law enforcement to stay vigilant during this busy holiday season.
So please don’t drink and drive during the holiday season and for all families traveling our roads during this time please stay extra alert for impaired drivers.
