State research document that there have already been 133 deaths on Minnesota roads in 2010. This is a little higher then this time the last two years Of particular concern, is the increase in the deaths of Minnesota teenagers on the highways. There have been 19 in 2010.
In past years, the Department of Public Safety attributed the drop in deaths to several factors, including increased seat belt use, enhanced patrols to combat impaired and aggressive driving, road safety improvement and higher gas prices, which is believed to cause motorists to drive less and at safer speeds. Gas prices may not be playing as big a roll as in past years.
Hopefully, the next couple of weeks will see safer roads and more people thinking about safety. The Minnesota State Patrol is going to be promoting the local Click it or Ticket program and has also indicated that they will be out in full force.
