Subaru is recalling 32,000 cars, from the Legacy, Outback and Impreza 2012 model year lines, due to a defective brake master cylinder which may cause the brake pedal to move farther than it is supposed to and the brake, to malfunction. (The recall does not involve the WRX/STI models of the Impreza.) Subaru has not received any reports of injuries or crashes, but they have received 112 complaints about the brake problem. Subaru claims many of the 32,000 cars are still on dealers’ new car lots and only about 3,000 of the cars have been sold.

At the same time, Honda is recalling 126,000 GL-1800 motorcycles from its 2001 to 2012 model years. In the Honda instance, a secondary brake master cylinder could malfunction and the rear brake could drag which might cause a crash and/or subsequent fire. Honda has received 26 complaints from motorcycle owners, two about fires that had occurred, none involving injuries.

Here are two cases where it is good for the consumer (and ultimately for the dealer and the companies) that sales of new vehicles—whether motorcycles or cars—are still slow. In the next few weeks, Honda and Subaru will request that owners take their vehicles to their dealers who will inspect and repair them if necessary.

In the meantime, Nissan will also recall over 7,000 – 2011 Rogue crossover vehicles in the U.S., because the electric power steering can fail. The circuit boards controlling the power steering may not have been installed correctly. Don’t know about you, but that makes me feel slightly uncomfortable. I suppose in a perfect world I’d like a car that runs and isn’t dependent on circuit boards… whether installed correctly or not. Circuit boards—in any vehicle or appliance—can be expensive to replace… and when they are done, they are done.

Circuit boards controlling your steering or the efficiency and accuracy of your brakes are not things you want to be worrying about when you’re out there on the highway with an 18-wheeler bearing down on you.

These are potential safety related defects. If your car is subject to one of these recalls, get it repaired as soon as possible
