Women have filed lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp. — maker of the Mirena intruteran device (IUD) — alleging they have suffered serious injuries and side effects that were caused by Mirena, and for which they were not warned.
Mirena is inserted into the uterus and releases a synthetic progestogen to prevent pregnancy. But women have alleged in thier lawsuits that Mirena can migrate from the implant site and cause serious internal injuries, including uterine perforations, sepsis, ectopic pregnancy, and abcesses. Plaintiffs say they were not warned of the risks but suffered injuries as a result.
The United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has decided to consolidate the federal lawsuits in the Southern District of New York.
