In April 2000, a New York resident, her son, daughter and newborn were driving on LaBounty Drive in Bellingham when a van swerved into her lane and struck her car. The driver suffered a broken nose, broken knee and facial lacerations. Her 7-year-old son was paralyzed from the waist down. Her daughter suffered two broken wrists and facial lacerations.

The 57-year-old driver of the van had been at a private club earlier that evening for a members’ dinner. He died from the accident and had an alcohol level almost twice as much as the legal limit. Despite difficulties with witnesses (due to the relationships between the club members and the driver), a jury ordered the private club to pay $14 million to the victims for their injuries, holding the bartender liable for serving an intoxicated person.

If you have been injured by a drunk driver, you should contact a personal injury attorney right away to preserve your claims. A personal injury attorney is skilled in investigating the accident, especially in cases where the witnesses may have had a special relationship with the driver at fault.
