Minnesota Department of Public Safety statistics show that 170 teens were killed in fatal crashes from 2005 through 2007. Another 750 teens were seriously injured in crashes during that time. With an eye to reducing these numbers, the Minnesota State Patrol is creating a graphic video that include testimonials, photos and reenactments to teach teenagers about the dangers of driving.
With the state recently enacting laws concerning text messaging and restrictions on when and who teens can drive with, the hope is that we will be reading of less cases of teens being killed and injured in car accidents. Since car accidents are the number one cause of death in teens, the project seems a worthy endeavor.
The video will be used in schools across the state and involve programs that hope to add to the student safety dialog. “There isn’t as much emphasis on teen driving as there should be,” she said. “Anything that makes parents more aware of the seriousness of an issue should be done.” said Gail Weinholzer, spokeswoman for AAA Minnesota/Iowa.
