North Carolina residents experienced a historic Christmas Day snowfall this year with snow hitting the ground in each of 100 counties in amounts ranging from a trace to 18 inches.
Sadly, several friends and families will remember the Christmas season of 2010 for other reasons.
Among four weather-related automobile accident fatalities over the weekend was Hannah Ruth Floyd, 24, of Chester, South Carolina. She was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed on Interstate-85 in Charlotte, NC at 3:40 a.m. on December 26, 2010.
The car Hannah was riding in ran off the highway and struck a utility pole. According to the trooper who investigated the fatal accident, the treacherous road conditions and alcohol were both contributing factors in the wreck that killed Hannah.
The driver of the car and another passenger were injured in the crash.
Near Sanford, NC, a 7-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a motorist. The tragic accident occurred around 7:00 p.m. on December 26, 2010, which was likely late enough into the evening for temperatures to drop well below freezing and cause icing on the road.
An article on news-record.com states that the NC Highway Patrol sent out a statewide weather advisory on December 26, 2010 that alerted motorists to the risk of “black ice that would settle on roads and highways by nightfall as temperatures plummeted below freezing.”
These same dangerous conditions likely contributed to a fatal car crash in Onslow County on NC 210 near Holly Ridge, though little information has been officially released regarding that wreck.
