Today , the Tennessee Department of Safety wraps up intense safety inspections that have lasted the past 72 hours . The purpose was to reduce the number of unsafe trucks and drivers on the roadways . Since Tuesday , the Tennessee Highway Patrol has been conducting safety checks around the clock . The inspections also act to reduce the number of accidents involving commerical trucks and tractor trailer accidents . In 2006 , the state troopers conducted more than 73,000 safety inspections and removed over 5,323 vehicles and 4,886 drivers from service due to safety issues and the drivers violating the number of hours they can drive .
