One of the most worrisome times for parents is when their children approach that age at which they are allowed to drive a car. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for 16 to 20 year olds. As a result of this statistic, some states are considering increasing the age at which one can obtain a license and also limiting who can be in a vehicle with a teenager who is driving. The hope is that limiting the number of passengers-typically other teenagers-within the car, the teen age driver will be less inclined to be distracted. Parents need to thoroughly discuss with their teenagers all of the dangers that can occur when one gets behind the wheel. Parents should also set good examples by always wearing seat belts and avoiding habits of talking on the phone, eating and other habits which divert ones attention away from paying close attention to the road while driving.
