The trucking industry and motor vehicle safety lobbyists have been fighting each other for years to legislate in Congress a trucking bill that better protects consumers. There has been constant debate over the restrictions passed last year which shortened the breaks truckers were required to take before returning to work. Now, congress has created a bill with new restrictions that hopefully will make the roads a little safer.
Senate bill 1739 or the “Trucking Safety Act” that was introduced in July, if passed, will require all trucks weighing above 26,000 pounds to be equipped with a crash avoidance system and be limited to a top speed of 70 mph. The bill also contains a section that would raise the minimum liability insurance for the first time since 1985. The new coverage will be $1.5 million, an increase from the current $750,000 which is woefully inadequate.
These new regulations, if put into action, hopefully will make our roadways less dangerous by eliminating a percentage of truck collisions. Further, having more insurance is bound to help victims when the terrible time arises. If you want to read the full bill, you can here .
