Several hundred cases of cantaloupes sent to New York, by Burch Farms, have been recalled due to the potential to be contaminated with Listeria. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, to date.
The recall involves Athena cantaloupes. They are a whole cantaloupe product item. If stickered, the label on the item will reference Burch Farm and read: “Cantaloupe PLU 4319.”
Consumers are urged to not consume the tainted melons and to dispose of them or return them to the store of purchase for a refund. Listeria has the potential to cause serious illness particularly in the young, old or those with otherwise compromised immune systems.

In 2011, listeria-tainted cantaloupe sickened 72 people and killed at least 16 people. And, in 1998, an outbreak of listeria infections caused by listeria-contaminated hot dogs and deli meats killed 21 people, CDC records show.
