Tons of iron and steel fell from a shipping crane in Jersey City this morning. Some of the metal landed in waters that lead to Upper New York Bay, according to officials.
The 300 to 500 tons of bulk aggregate metal — shredded and fragmented composite from crushed cars that was destined for a mill, said Daniel Strechay, a spokesman for Sims Metal Management, which owns the recycling operation.
No one was injured in the incident. And, no hazardous materials were involved, confirmed Sgt. Brian Polite.
The accident happened when the metal was being loaded onto a barge and it became unstable, tipping over. Some of the metal fell on the company’s property while the remainder metal fell into Claremont Channel, an inlay off the Upper New York Bay.
The company is seeking government approval to begin a recovery operation for the metals this week.
