A defect in the fuel-filter heater has prompted BMW North America to recall certain models of its X5 xDrive 35d diesel SUVS due to a fire hazard if the heater overloads.
The 2009 model X5 diesels affected by this recall were built from October 1, 2008 to June 12, 2009, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). An estimated 2,120 vehicles are being recalled.
NHTSA says on its Web site that the fuel-filter heater that warms the diesel fuel in cold weather could electrically overload and stay on even when the car is turned off. That could lead to a dead battery — or to a vehicle fire.
Beginning in October, BMW will notify consumers and dealers will replace the heater free of charge.
