Can obesity lead to migraines?? According to a recent U.S government health survey it was found that people ages 20 to 55 who were classified as obese by the use of the body mass index or a measure of belly fat, more frequently reported having migraines or very severe headaches. Based on 22,000 people, the study also showed that 37% obese women as compared to 29% of non-obese women were more likely to suffer from the migraines. The same was found for the men with 20% of obese men suffering the headaches compared to the 16% who didn’t.
Migraines are severe headaches that also may include nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and noise. According to the National Headache Foundation, thirty million people ages 20 to 45 are affected by migraines in the United States each year.
The study also concluded that the risk of migraines decreased in overweight people after age 55.
