As if the warnings on Actos, Byetta, Januvia and Victoza have not been enough for people living with Diabetes, some popular testing strips and meters were recalled during the month of January.
Tandem Diabetes Care recently recalled a specific lot of insulin cartridges used with the t:slim insulin pump due to the risk of potential leakage. A leaky cartridge could be bring very adverse side effects for patients who rely on an insulin pump to deliver the correct dosage of insulin to their system. Getting too much or too little could be very harmful.
Just before Tandem announced a recall, Nipro Diagnositics initiated a volutnrary recall on a number of TRUEbalance and TRUEtrack Blood Glucose Meters due to an incorrect factory setting. The meter incorrectly displays the result as mmoi/L rather than mg/dl. Patients with this defective device may believe they have a lower then expected blood glucose level.
For the millions of Americans living with Diabetes, 2014 is not off to a good start. Two products were recalled in January. Byetta Lawsuits and Januvia Lawsuits continue to grow as more Actos lawsuits go to trial. Takeda scrapped plans for their new blockbuster Diabetes drug, Fasiglifam. The light at the end of the tunnel may come in April when the FDA decides whether or not to approve Europe’s new GLP-1 Diabetes drug, albiglutid. Albiglutid, also known as Eperzan is in the same class as Byetta and Januvia. Hopefully, unlike Byetta and Januvia, Eperzan will not come with a warning about an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.
