Energy drinks may seem harmless enough, but when consumed by young children may prove deadly. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is investigating the reports of five deaths and one heart attack that are believed to be linked to Monster Energy drinks which contain high amounts of caffeine. While these deaths have not been directly linked to these drinks, consumers/parents should be aware of the potential health risks associated with consumption.

Most of us grew up being told not to drink coffee as the caffeine might stunt our growth, but the drinks of today are loaded with caffeine and other stimulants. Some parents may not know their children are consuming these products or they may not know the associated risks. What’s worse is the FDA does not oversee these drinks as they are not considered food items.

Children and adolescents are at an increased risk for complications. Many medical journals warn against using Energy Drinks as they have no true therapeutic purpose and put children at risk for serious health issues including an irregular heartbeat and even sudden death.

In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a study titled "Sports Drinks and Energy Drinks for Children and Adolescents: Are They Appropriate?" It’s worth the read.
