Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare announced the maximum dosage of Tylenol products will be lowered from eight pills per day to six beginning in the fall.
“When used as directed, acetaminophen is safe. But, when too much is taken, it can cause liver damage.”
The action aims to reduce the risk of accidental overdose. Currently, recommendations advise taking no more than 4,000 milligrams of acetaminophen daily. The new label will recommend no more than 3,000 milligrams per day.
Additionally, the dosing interval also will be extended — to every 6 hours, from every 4-6 hours.
Some 50 million Americans use acetaminophen weekly to treat a variety of ailments from fever, cold and flu symptoms and more, said McNeil. In fact, hundreds of over-the-counter cold, fever and headache medications, as well as prescription drugs, have acetaminophen in them.
In June, J&J recalled some lots of Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets due to odor reports.
