Children with asthma can suffer fatal consequences related to flu complications. Children with asthma are more likely to suffer from flu related pneumonia and acute respiratory disease. Flu vaccinations are recommended for all asthmatic children 6 months of age and older, however, recent studies show that only 3 out of every 10 kids with asthma actually receive the readily available vaccine.

Researchers are unsure why the percentage of asthmatic children who receive the flu vaccination is so low. One reason may be parent’s concern that the vaccination may spur an attack of their child’s asthma. Researchers recommend that doctors consult with parents to express the necessity of the vaccination and allay fears of asthma attacks.

Most importantly, doctors stress that flu complications can be fatal to adults and children with asthma, therefore, it is vital for all kids with asthma to be vaccinated for the flu.
