Lamps sold exclusively by IKEA, in the US and Canada, have been recalled due to a strangulation hazard posed by the electrical cord that hangs from the wall-mounted lamps, intended for children. This recall is a re-announcement stemming from a previous recall in December 2013.
The recall involves IKEA children’s wall-mounted lamps sold in various style names, shapes and colors. A complete list with accompanying photos can be accessed on the CPSC website.
According to the CPSC, “A 15-month-old baby became entangled in the TASSA NATT lamp’s cord and nearly strangled. This incident, and the death of a 16-month-old baby who died after getting entangled in the SMILA lamp’s cord, were reported in the previous recall. In both incidents, which occurred in Europe, the lamp cord was pulled into the crib by the infants.”
Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled lamps and to contact IKEA for a free repair kit. The lamp should not be used until the repair kit is installed. In fact, the lamp should be removed from the wall.
