Kolcraft strollers recalled after amputation of three kids’ fingertips

Amputation of children’s fingertips has prompted the recall of Kolcraft Contours Options three-wheeled and four-wheeled strollers.

Kolcraft Enterprises Inc., of Chicago, IL, is recalling about 36,000 strollers in the United States and 270 in Canada because the finger of a child, parent or caregiver can be caught in an opening of the hinge mechanism used to adjust the handlebars of the stroller. If this should happen, it can result in amputation of the fingertip.

According to a release by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the manufacturer is aware of three children who suffered fingertip amputation and two adults whose fingers were either cut or smashed.

The Kolcraft Contours Options stroller recall affects models numbers beginning with:

• ZL002
• ZL005
• ZL008
• ZL015
• ZL018

Consumers can identify the recalled models by finding the model number and manufacture date on a sticker above the left wheel (for model numbers starting with ZL002) or on a label sewn into the edge of the stroller seat pad’s back (for model number starting with ZL005, ZL008, ZL015 and ZL018). The strollers were manufactured in a variety of colors between January 2006 and November 2009.

Consumers may have purchased these Kolcraft Contours Options strollers between January 2006 and June 2012 from Amazon.com, ToysRUs.com, Target.com and juvenile product specialty stores nationwide for about $150.

Kolcraft advises consumers immediately stop using these strollers until they obtain and install a free repair kit offered by the company. Consumers can request the free repair kit by calling (800) 453-7673 or by ordering online.
