Select packages of dog and cat food have been recalled by The Kroger Co. in 19 states because the products pose a health risk to pets.
According to the company, the recall involves some bags of Pet Pride Cat food, Pet Pride Tasty Blend Poultry & Seafood Cat Food and Pet Pride Kitten Formula. As well as Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food, Kroger Value Cat Food and Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food.
The recall was issued because some of the products may contain aflatoxin, a fungus-produced carcinogen found in some corn.
The Kroger Co. urges customers to immediately consult with their veterinarian if their animals show any signs of sluggishness or lethargy combined with any reluctance to eat. A yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, severe blood or diarrhea is also a warning sign, the company said.
Kroger has established a Customer Recall Notification system to help customers identify if they have any of the recalled products. Most of the recalled items have an expiration date of October 23 and 24, 2011.

Is the expiration date the only way we can tell if the dog food is part of the recall? Do we take the dog food back to Kroger for a refund or exchange for another dog food? Please give more information about this recall.

I just buried my German Shepard chow mix,Tuesday 12/14/2010 she was only seven year old and I loved her very much. I have three other dogs that have been eating Old Yeller for over a year and just in the last few months they haven't been eating very well.I have noticed weight loss in all of them and they eat large quantities of grass and throw it up.I thought it was just the heat in Texas that caused the weight loss and decrease in appetite.I just purchased a 22lb bag of old yeller and a 17.6lb bag of pets pride puppy food the expiration dates are 11/2/2011 and 11/08/2011 not counting all the bags that they have eaten that I don't know the expiration dates.I hope to God I haven't been poisoning my dogs with this food.

My dogs just love Old Yeller please give us more information on the products. And it would be nice to know what to do with the food if it is bad.

I have been feeding my three dogs the Kroger product in question regularly, and one (an 8 month old puppy) has been very lethargic, and showed loss of appetite during the past week...and now this evidently explains why. Everything I have read about aflatoxin does NOT bode well for my dog. I'm taking him to the vet this afternoon...and like a previous post, I am hoping to God that I haven't poisoned my dogs. So, besides the $5.89 per bag reimbursal (big deal) if my dog dies, or if my dogs require significant veterinary treatment...is there some sort of method of reimbursement by Kroger or the dog food manufacturer? I, like many, am newly self-employed and resources are very limited...and quite frankly, an unexpected vet bill like this sort could sky rocket in short order. And to be honest, I bought the Kroger brand food, because it was reasonably priced, and the ingredients/nutritional values seemed comparable to the high-priced stuff. Fooled me! I'm a Kroger fan, but this sure is scary, and if my dogs suffer death or serious illness, I'm going to be looking for some financial help from the manufacturer...and would like to know how that works, and how to proceed.
