Smith & Nephew has pulled a hip device component from the matker – the R3 Acetabular System hip devices. As reported in Businessweek, the company is "not satisfied with the clinical results" because a number of patients required a second surgery and have had the metal component removed. Smith & Nephew describes the recall as precautionary.
Smith & Nephew is not the first company to have a problem with possible infections caused by a metal hip. Recalls from other companies, such as the DePuy unit of Johnson & Johnson who recently had issues with lawsuits against Depuy for metal on metal hip devices.
