Is Ocean Management Systems having a bad Summer? To the company’s credit, it has issued four safety recalls in two months. Unlike some companies, those that choose to hide and dispute equipment defects, Ocean Management should be commended for its prompt, thorough and, probably, very expensive, recalls.

The first recall was in mid-April for a first stage balance chamber plug, which may loosen from the scuba regulator causing a high-pressure leak, creating unstable pressure, and posing a drowning hazard to divers. The second was issued the next day, for an O-ring in the high pressure air connector which may fail, leak air, and cause a slow but continuous loss of breathing gas, which would require a diver to surface quickly or, potentially drown. The third, at the end of April, was for defective buoyancy compensators, in which the seal ring may crack, also posing a drowning risk. The final one was issued at the end of June, for defective power inflators; apparently, the oral inflator button is not properly bonded to the oral stem and can fall off during use, posing a leak of the buoyancy compensator contents and posing, you guessed it, a drowning risk. There is a long list of serial numbers for recalled devices available from the company.

Most of the dive gear was sold nationwide from 2006 to the present time. Ocean Management Systems advises that divers stop using the equipment and contact them for free repairs. Hopefully people who bought these devices in their various forms (see Ocean Management website for details) will be safe and not have to find out, the hard way, that their gear doesn’t work.
