With July 4th fast approaching, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is sharing some sobering statistics about drownings that have occurred during previous holidays. Along with fireworks, time spent by the pool is another traditional July 45h activity for many families. As such, the agency aims to remind parents and caregivers about pool safety.
Drowning Statistics
In 2011, there were 24 drowning incidents that involved children under the age of 15, during the week of July 4, according to USA Swimming.
In 2010, there were 24 drowning incidents during that same week.
Annually there was an estimated 390 pool or spa-related drownings involving the same age group.
Another 5,200 children, also of the same group, visited emergency rooms for near-drowning injuries. It’s unknown how many children suffer serious brain damage.
Pool Safely
Children should never be unattended in a pool or spa
Children should know and understand basic water safety tips
Keep a telephone nearby when you or your family is using the pool or spa
Share safety instructions with friends, family and neighbors
