Parents and caregivers should be aware of a recall involving 794,247 child safety seats, manufactured by Dorel Juvenile Group and branded Cosco, Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st, because the harness could fail to restrain a child in the event of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Dorel Juvenile Group is recalling the car seats, manufactured between May 1, 2008 and April 30, 2009 that have a “Center Front Adjuster” (CFA) for the harness, because the harness locking and release button can stick. The release button may not always return to the locked position. This can cause the harness adjustment strap to slip and the harness to loosen. In a crash, the loose harness may not restrain the child and increases the risk of injury.

NHTSA investigations into two reports by the same consumer alleging the center front adjuster (CFA) on two different Dorel Vantage child seats would not hold the harness securely led to the recall.

The recall involves certain Cosco, Maxi-Cosi and Safety 1st branded infant, convertible and booster child restraint systems. It includes convertible child restraints Alpha Omega, Alpha Omega Elite, Enspira, Priori, Prospect and Vantage, and infant child restraints Mico and OnBoard. Dorel Juvenile Group sold them as stand-alone seats and as part of a travel system with a stroller.

Consumer can determine if the recall affects their child safety seat by calling 1 866-623-3139 or visiting the manufacturer’s website and viewing the model list:

“This voluntary recall is being conducted out of an abundance of caution with no reported incidents or injuries,” Dorel Juvenile Group said in a statement. “Parents and caregivers are being provided detailed information on how to make the simple recommended adjustments to their car seat. “

Dorel Juvenile Group will send consumers a repair kit including a small tube of non-toxic, food-grade lubricant to apply to the CFA to prevent sticking and allow it to properly engage the CFA strap.

“Until the remedy has been applied, consumers can continue to use the seats, however, parents and caregivers should make sure the harness is properly adjusted and the lock/release button is fully in the locked position,” the NHTSA release said. “After adjustment, pull on the shoulder part of the harness to make sure it is secure and does not loosen.”
