As we prepare to change our clocks this weekend, remember to change the batteries in your smoke detectors too.

A devestating fire in Bronx, New York today serves as an unfortunate reminder that smoke detectors must be routinely checked and in operating condition in order to help save lives. Non-working smoke detectors led to the deaths of 8 children and 1 adult in one New York family this morning. Fire officials traced the fire to an overheated space heater placed too close to a mattress. The home had two smoke detectors, but neither had batteries in it. By the time the family members woke up, it was too late for them to evacuate the house.

This trajedy should at least serve as a reminder to everyone to make sure those smoke detectors are working!
