Rotavirus is a contagious virus that can cause gastroenteritis, diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain. These symptoms can lead to severe dehydration and death. Infants and young children are the most susceptible to rotavirus.

The rotavirus vaccine saves lives, but a severe rotavirus vaccine reaction can occur on extremely rare occasions.

Rotavirus vaccine adverse reactions may include:

  • Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP)
  • Encephalopathy
  • Encephalitis
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS)
  • Shoulder injury
  • Transverse myelitis

These conditions can be severe and life-threatening, but the side effects of the rotavirus can also be deadly. Parents concerned with rotavirus vaccine adverse reactions should follow their pediatrician’s advice concerning childhood vaccines.
