It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is less than a month away. And, that it is known to be the leading day for home cooking fires. With that in mind we created a short safety checklist for turkey day cooking.
Safety in the Kitchen
Prior to the big day of cooking, it’s a good idea to clean the stove and remove any food and grease building up from on or in the stove.
Stay in the kitchen to supervise the cooking when possible and but more importantly try to stay in the home and not leave it unattended.
With so many different things going on at one time, set a timer and check it often.
Children should be kept from the kitchen; particularly from being close to the hot stove.
If an oven fire occurs, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
Safety when using Fryers
Adhere to all instructions outlined in the user guide.
The turkey should be completely thawed and all wrappings and parts removed prior to frying.
The fryer should be attended at all times.
Two feet of space – at least – should be between the liquid propane tank and the fryer burner.
Turn of the gas supply immediately if oil begins to smoke.
A fire extinguisher should be nearby at all times.
Water should never be used to extinguish a grease fire.
This is not meant to be an exhaustive list but it includes some important safety tips. Happy Thanksgiving!
