The 4th of July is a loved holiday for many reasons, including fireworks and celebrating with friends and family, but, all too often festivities turn tragic due to drunk-driving crashes.

In July 2014, the latest stats available, over the 4th of July holiday, 164 people were killed in crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration of (BAD) of .08 or higher. These preventable deaths represent 41% of the 397 people killed in crashes during this period, according to the NHTSA.

In light of the upcoming holiday, the Nevada Department of Public Safety is partnering with Uber on the Zero Fatalities awareness campaign that focuses on preventing drunk driving during the 4th of July weekend.

The campaign, which starts June 30th, runs through July 5th. Uber will offer discounted ride codes to cover any new user’s rides up to $15, according to Nevada DPS.

The goal of the campaign is to highlight safe and new transportation alternatives to driving impaired which will help reduce fatalities and serious injuries as a result.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will receive $5 from each ride.
