The Hartz Mountain Corp., working in cooperation with the FDA, issued a voluntarily recall of one lot of Wardley Betta Fish Food because it may contain Salmonella.

Salmonella is a bacterial organism that can cause serious, and in some cases, fatal infections in people, but most importantly young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Salmonella can affect animals eating the tainted product, but it can also affect humans that handle the contaminated products.

The nationwide recall affects 8,112 containers with UPC number 0-43324-01648, isolated to the lot code PP06331. Consumers are urged to properly discard the affected products and to not use them.

To date, the company has not received any reports of illness associated with this recall. For more information, and to obtain a refund, consumers should contact Hartz at 1-800-275-1414.
