Yesterday we wrote a post about winterizing your vehicle. Today we are writing about winterizing your home.

Have the furnace inspected – prior to turning on the furnace, have an HVAC professional come out and give the unit a tune up to ensure that it is running safely and efficiently. It may say you back some money, but your family’s safety is most important. It’s also a good idea to winterize the A/C unit since you won’t likely be using it during these colder months.

Trim Trees & Clean Gutters – snow and can weigh down tree branches leading to bigger problems, therefore, if there are tree branches hanging near the roof or home windows, trim them back. If they are near electric lines, call the power company and they will take care of it. Clogged gutters can wreak more havoc during snow and rain storms so ensure they are clean.

Reverse Ceiling fans – during the winter months you can use your fans in reverse to help warm your home. It works by pushing warm air down and forces it to recirculate the room.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors – the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be changed yearly to ensure safety. Home fires increase during the winter months.

Safety Kit – every home should have at least a 72-hour safety kit that includes emergency supplies, food and water should there be a big ice storm and power is lost.

Chimney – similar to that of a furnace inspection have your chimney inspected before using it each year. For more information on finding a chimney sweep, visit the Chimney Safety Institute of America’s website at csia.org.
