Everyone can remember where they were on 9/11. I was in court and was heading back to the office as I listened to reports of airplanes seemingly coming down everywhere. The day was spent watching TV and talking to family and friends. Yes, we still remember, but we go ahead and deal with the rest of our lives.
But, there is a group who are still dealing with hearings from that day. It’s the group of more than 9,000 rescue and cleanup workers who sued over illnesses and injuries they say stemmed from working at the World Trade Center site in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. They are looking at trials that will start at the beginning of May.
New York City has been playing an interesting roll because they are defendants in a lot of these cases. At the same time, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has been actively supporting a bill pending in Congress that would offer federal relief to people harmed by work at the site.
The case has defense attorneys who are arguing that there is no link between the injures suffered and being on site in the aftermath. There are smoking and lifestyle defenses being used to their fullest.
I think back and remember the day the President saluted these workers as heroes. Hopefully, they will be treated that way throughout.
