Earlier in the month we wrote about a new report released by the CPSC as part of the Pool Safely campaign that shows 137 children younger than 15 drowned in a pool or spa during summer season.
To that end, below is a list of prevention tips and measures that should be taken to help avoid these tragedies from occurring.
Drowning Prevention & Safety
Children should never be left alone near ANY water including a tub or basin. Young children can drown in very small amounts of fluid, within seconds.
You should be within an arm’s reach to a child in a tub at all times. If you must leave the room for even a second, take the child with you.
Don’t leave a baby or small child in a tub under the care of another young child.
Never leave any buckets with standing water unattended. Toddlers can fall headfirst into the bucket and drown. This is also important for outdoors as well. Don’t leave buckets to collect rainwater where children can access them.
Placing locks on the toilet seat is a good preventive measure. Your plumber might even thank you later as that is another consideration – toys and objects in the toilet – along with the risk of drowning.
Lastly and most importantly, take a class on CPR if you haven’t already. It can save a life when every second counts.
